Quick Tips for Finding Your First Piece

1. Determine your preferences

2. Utilize Instagram

  • Follow accounts where individuals showcase their personal collections and pieces available for sale to gain inspiration.

3.  Establish your budget:

  • Consider your price range.
  • It’s advisable to search within your budget or a close range if you are using platforms that allow offers to be sent to sellers.
  • I have found that sellers are very receptive to offers, so don’t hesitate to send a reasonable one, but try not to get your hopes up too much either.

4. Initiate your search:

  • Start with a basic Google search to explore various options. For instance, search for “antique garnet rings” if you’re unsure about your preferences and once you identify a preferred style or period, refine your search by including specific criteria such as period, material, style, and metal content. For example, “Antique Georgian flat-cut garnet ring 14k gold.”

5. Explore online marketplaces:

  • Etsy offers a plethora of affordable pieces. Sellers may also send offers, or you can respectfully inquire about price adjustments or upcoming sales.
  • eBay has pretty much anything you could ever want and allows you to directly send offers to sellers.

6. Consider thrift store auction sites:

  • Explore auction sites like Goodwill Auction for potential finds.

7. Attend estate sales and flea markets:

  • Estate sales and flea markets are a great place to find affordable pieces and a lovely way to spend day. Get some friends together and check one out, You never know what you might find!

Happy hunting!
